There is little value to be had from making plans to completely gut the interior of your house only to find that you can't afford it. Having a budget in place from the start will allow you to quickly discard plans that are out of your price range. You are also going to want to think about the scope of what you are planning to do. Are you just making some cosmetic changes or do you want to make major structural changes?

If the decision is that you are going to make major changes to your house you are probably going to want to hire an architect. This will help to make sure that not only does the work look but that it will also be structurally sound. An architect can take your vision and turn it into practical plans or he can do the actual design work himself. The downside of course is that hiring an architect can be very expensive. If you are on a tight budget this can be a problem.

If you decide that you can't afford an architect of if you are willing to accept a design of your home that is not unique you can buy plans online. These are plans that you can give to your contractor as they are or you can make minor changes to them. Either way this can be a cost effective way to get the plans that you need to remodel your home. The downside here is that the plans are not going to be unique so if you want something that is custom designed you will need to use an architect.

One last option that you may want to consider is to work directly with your contractor to come up with your home remodelling plans. Your contractor likely has a collection of plans available that he can use as the basis of the design. This falls somewhere in between the use of an architect and the use of plans that you bought online. You can make some modifications to the plans so that they are semi custom but they won't be as unique or as original as the plans that you could get if you were to hire an architect.
