The Attic

A lot of people find that they have a need for more space in their house. In a lot of cases the basement is the easiest option if they need more room. If you have a house without a basement however you will need to come up with a new plan. In this case the best option is usually to add a room in the attic.

When it comes to decorating the attic the most common thing to do is to turn it into an extra bedroom. Many people do this because they have more kids than bedrooms. This can be a very convenient way to add more space to your house. However a bedroom is far from the only use that you are going to have for an attic. You can also turn into a den, or an office or a just a place to watch television if that is what you want. Fortunately decorating an attic is fairly simple to do.

The big thing when you are decorating an attic regardless of what you are using it for is that you don't want it to look like an attic. Make sure that you put up walls so that there is a separate room up there and not just a big empty space. You are also going to want to make sure that those walls are decorated, either with paint or wall paper. Make sure that you put down proper flooring. You want the room in the attic to feel like it is part of the house not just an empty space where you stuck the extra kid.

The other big issue is that you are going to want to make sure that you add a window to the attic room. If not it is going to be very dark and dreary up there. In most cases you will get the best results if you put the window right into the roof. Unfortunately this involves major work so it can get pretty expensive. The other option that you have is that if you put the room at one end of the attic you can put the window into the wall. This won't provide nearly as much light but it will be much easier to install.

The other big thing that you are going to have to deal with if you have an attic room is that it will get very hot in there during the summer. Make sure that the attic is properly insulated before you even start building the room. Also you are going to want to make sure that you install a ceiling fan so that you can get rid of some of that heat. Remember that most houses are designed to get rid of heat through the attic; this can be uncomfortable for the person living in the attic if you don't have a plan to address it.
